Judy’s teaching career kicked off in Jacksonville, Florida, but her heart remained in her hometown. She returned to Elizabethton with a vision to inspire and educate the next generation. One of her groundbreaking accomplishments was the establishment of the first elementary physical education program at Harold McCormick School, paving the way for a new approach to physical activity among young students.

In 1989, Judy made a significant impact in the realm of physical education by founding the first demonstration school for this subject. Her efforts didn’t stop there; she also played a crucial role in developing the K-12 physical education curriculum for the state of Tennessee. A few years later, in 1971, she transitioned to T.A. She took on the role of Newspaper in Education Director for the local paper, the Elizabethton STAR, engaging students in understanding the importance of journalism. Alongside her love for teaching, Judy was a devoted wife to her late husband, Haymond “Doc” Thompson. The pair shared a passion for travel, reveling in countless memories made on their cruises together. Judy was also a proud mother and grandmother, with family being at the core of her life.
