As December rolls in here in Elizabethton, you can sense the excitement in the air. From festive decorations to special events, this charming town is gearing up for a wonderful holiday season. Expect no shortage of delightful activities that will bring history to life while celebrating Christmas in true 18th-century style!
Before we dive into the festivities, let’s talk about the weather you can expect! The forecast indicates we’ll be experiencing cloudy skies with occasional rain—especially in the morning. Temperatures will peak at around 53°F and then dip to a brisk near 40°F. With a steady breeze from the WNW at 10 to 20 mph, it’s a good time to bring your cozy scarf and perhaps an umbrella since there’s a 100% chance of rain!
The highlight of December in Elizabethton is undoubtedly the History at Home series of ranger programs and guided tours at two significant historical sites: the Carter Mansion and Sabine Hill. These tours will immerse visitors in the rich history of 18th-century Christmas decorating!
On December 1, 5, 10, and 19, guided tours of Sabine Hill will kick off at 1:30 p.m., led by the knowledgeable AmeriCorps member Braden Lay. Here’s a fun fact: Sabine Hill is renowned for its stunning Federal architecture, built right after the War of 1812—making it not just a feast for the eyes, but a slice of history! Families will be fascinated to learn about the Taylor family, two governors of Tennessee, and the family’s significant role in local history.
But wait, there’s more! The guided tours of the Carter Mansion will be held on December 3, 8, and 12, also starting at 1:30 p.m. With Braden Lay at the helm, you’ll explore Tennessee’s oldest frame house, built between 1775-1780. The home is filled with stories from its frontier past and connections to the well-known Carter family, who played a big part in the settlement of the Watauga Valley.
On December 11, 17, and 27, the Carter Mansion will offer special tours meticulously decorated for the holiday season in the style of the 18th century. These special tours will allow you to step back in time and see how Christmas was celebrated long ago! Admission for these tours is slightly higher, at just $12 for adults, but well worth it for the unique experience.
Additionally, on December 20, join Park Ranger Taylor Moorefield for a charming story time by the fireplace! Scheduled from 10 a.m. to 11 a.m. at the Talbot log cabin inside Fort Watauga, this event promises to be a delightful winter experience, featuring stories that include the excitement of General Washington’s famous crossing of the Delaware on Christmas morning!
Don’t miss another festive opportunity on December 23 when Ranger Sarah Vogt will host a workshop on crafting traditional 18th-century pomanders. Using fresh oranges and cloves, participants will create beautifully scented ornaments that were once popular decorations—perfect for getting into the holiday spirit!
Each of these events requires a reservation, so be sure to secure your spot online. The holiday season is a fantastic time to engage with Elizabethton’s historical charm, and be part of a community that values its past while celebrating the joys of the present. Come join in the fun and discover the unique stories that make this town so special!
