BRISTOL, Va. — If you happened to be in Bristol recently, you might have noticed some new faces around town—four friendly paramedics all the way from Kassel, Germany! For the past two weeks, these medics have been taking part in an amazing EMS Exchange Program, and we couldn’t be more excited to have them here.
The adventure started in May 2023 when a group of paramedics from this Virginia region ventured to Kassel. They spent time learning about the unique practices and approaches to emergency medical services in Germany. Fast forward to now, it’s the German paramedics’ turn to experience life across the Atlantic!
During their visit, the Kassel medics have made stops at various locations, including Virginia Beach, Richmond, and Blacksburg. But the highlights of their trip might just be their time spent with the Bristol Life Saving Crew. They’ve been swapping insights on patient care, gaining valuable knowledge from each other in the process.
One of the German paramedics, Luisa Hornschuh, shared her thoughts on what she’s experienced so far. She mentioned, “Patient care here is very similar to what we have in Germany. However, there is one big difference.” Imagine the fascinating conversations that must unfold when professionals from two different countries share their experiences and expertise!
Ryan Shaw, an Advanced EMT with the Bristol team, echoed Luisa’s sentiment, saying that engaging with the German medics has been incredibly enriching. “It’s been great talking to them; I’ve learned so much!” he added. This exchange of information not only enhances the skills of all involved but helps foster camaraderie that transcends borders.
While they’ve been busy with training and discussions, the Kassel medics have also made the most of their downtime. From exhilarating visits to Dollywood to indulging in delightful treats at Blackbird Bakery, every moment has been filled with exploration. They even showed some local spirit by cheering on the Virginia High Bearcats during a game! Now that’s a great way to blend work and play.
The four paramedics are set to continue their adventure across Virginia, with their next stops including Roanoke, Fredericksburg, and the bustling city of Washington D.C.. It’s a whirlwind tour that’s a testament to the joys of international exchange, and in just a few weeks—on November 24 to be exact—they will head back home to Germany, bringing with them new friendships and invaluable experiences.
This EMS Exchange Program exemplifies how sharing knowledge and culture can bridge gaps and build understanding. The friendship that forms during such exchanges not only enhances professional skills but also enriches personal lives. Who knows? The next time you see a paramedic in Bristol, they might just have a tale or two about their international buddies!
Stay tuned for more updates as these Kassel medics continue to explore our beautiful state and create lasting connections!
