Johnson City, TN – In an inspiring show of community spirit, East Tennessee State University (ETSU) has stepped up to help those affected by Hurricane Helene with a substantial donation of 800 meals. As the storm severely impacted several areas across East Tennessee, The Salvation Army found itself in a tight spot, needing to provide food to those in desperate need while struggling to source adequate supplies.
“On Tuesday, we were in a bit of a snag,” shared Major Brooks Gilliam, the Incident Commander for The Salvation Army’s disaster response. “We had the capability to deliver meals, but we were struggling to find the food to do so.”
Fortunately, ETSU didn’t hesitate to answer the call. The meals were prepared by Sodexo, the university’s food service partner, under the expert guidance of Executive Chef Beau Gerarde. This effort is part of ETSU’s ongoing commitment to supporting their local communities during hard times.
Dr. Michelle Byrd, the Dean of Students at ETSU, highlighted the university’s mission that dates back to its founding in 1911. “ETSU has always focused on improving the quality of life for the people in this region and beyond,” she explained. “Our motto, ‘people come first,’ resonates especially during crises like this.” This particular donation of 800 meals is part of the university’s Bucs Rebuild Together initiative, which is focused on addressing the needs arising from the devastation caused by Hurricane Helene.
The meals were divided into 400 lunches and 400 dinners, specifically delivered to Mountain City, a region that experienced severe impacts from the storm. For families grappling with the aftermath and trying to rebuild their lives, receiving these meals was like a lifeline they desperately needed.
On the same day, The Salvation Army worked tirelessly to expand their relief efforts across four counties to ensure that even more people accessed food and care. To date, they have made serious strides in supporting local communities devastated by Hurricane Helene.
So far, The Salvation Army has provided food and assistance for four days and continues to mobilize resources to help individuals and families affected by the disaster. As recovery efforts ramp up, the organization remains committed to ensuring that everyone in need receives timely support.
Your support during these trying times could make a world of difference for those still recovering from the repercussions of Hurricane Helene. Together, through generous contributions and community engagement, we can help rebuild and restore lives.
