Bristol, Tennessee, is stepping up in a big way as the city transforms Bristol Motor Speedway (BMS) into the Northeast Tennessee Disaster Relief Center. This initiative, made possible in partnership with the Tennessee Emergency Management Agency, is aimed at supporting those affected by the devastating flooding caused by Hurricane Helene.

The catastrophic flooding, which started wreaking havoc on Friday, September 26, has impacted numerous counties—including Unicoi, Carter, Washington, Johnson, and Greene. Many residents are still grappling with the aftermath, facing power outages, lack of running water, and damaged roads that hinder access to essential services. Sadly, there have been multiple confirmed fatalities, and many more individuals remain unaccounted for. In light of this tragic situation, the community is rallying together to provide assistance.

What You Need to Know About the Relief Center

The Northeast Tennessee Disaster Relief Center at BMS is set to become a home base for recovery efforts and a major distribution point for essential supplies. The center will officially open its doors on Thursday, October 3, at 8 a.m. (ET), becoming a lifeline for those in need. The donation and collection site will operate daily from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m.

Located in the BMS South Building at the BMS Entrance 2 (South) off Volunteer Parkway, this facility aims to bring together resources and assistance to help our neighbors through this challenging time. Members of the public are invited and encouraged to donate crucial items, such as:

• Bottled water
• Non-perishable food
• Baby supplies
• Personal hygiene products

Providing Help Where It’s Needed Most

To enhance the ongoing recovery efforts, Bristol Motor Speedway is offering more than just a collection point. The venue will also provide workspace for logistics and search-and-rescue teams, serving as a central staging area amidst the chaos. Additionally, a regional disaster relief hotline has been established to offer support to those who need assistance. Starting from October 3, individuals can contact the hotline at 423-830-2696.

Jerry Caldwell, the president and general manager of BMS, emphasized the importance of community support: “Our communities, friends, and loved ones are hurting, and we stand ready to assist in any way that we possibly can. We are proud to be a part of this relief and recovery effort and to utilize our facility as a resource and distribution center.”

Temporary Facilities for Rescue Operations

In addition to aiding donations, Bristol Motor Speedway is leveraging its resources effectively. The BMS Hospitality Village, Medallion Campground, and the BMS Helipad will be designated for supporting approved search and rescue teams. These facilities will facilitate coordinated efforts as teams deploy to the most affected regions.
