In Johnson City, 8th graders at St. Mary’s School explored the impact of Hurricane Helene on their community through research, interviews, and storytelling. Their project highlighted local resilience and compassion during adversity. As the community rallies for recovery, inspiring tales emerge, including a father’s determination to reach his daughter’s wedding, emphasizing the spirit of love and togetherness amidst challenges.
In the heart of Johnson City, Tennessee, a group of spirited 8th graders at St. Mary’s School have taken on the challenge of studying the impact of Hurricane Helene. As part of their capstone project, these ambitious students delved into the historical disaster, examining how it affected their own Northeast Tennessee region. What was intended as a school assignment has turned into a valuable lesson about research, storytelling, and community resilience.
The students, including a diligent learner named Easton Gentry, have found that the project wasn’t just about gathering information but also about learning to identify important details and critically sifting through dense data. This involved conducting interviews, which provided them with firsthand accounts of the hurricane’s impact. They connected with Dr. Sean Ochsenbein, the Medical Director at Unicoi County Memorial Hospital, to get insights on how the local medical community responded during the crisis.
In addition to interviewing experts, the students immersed themselves in various resources, including watching flood videos, studying local incidents such as the Impact Plastics employees’ experiences, and reading numerous news articles. Fellow student Sorie Kaba highlighted the value of gathering facts from primary sources and comparing different reports to discern discrepancies.
The culmination of their hard work resulted in research papers that narrated around seven pages of stories, shedding light on the resilience of local citizens, organizations, and government agencies during the disaster. Their language arts teacher, Kim Kenneson, has been instrumental in guiding them, emphasizing the importance of media literacy and compassion in storytelling. The lessons learned during this project stretch far beyond written pages—these young scholars are honing skills that will serve them for years to come.
Amidst these recovery efforts, local businesses stepped up, with Admiral Propane generously donating 120-gallon propane tanks to the Tennessee Army National Guard. Their contribution showcases the spirit of community as it comes together in times of need.
Armed with nothing but his cell phone flashlight, he navigated the treacherous terrain, climbing piles of debris and dodging heavy machinery along the way. Just when exhaustion was setting in, a kind-hearted motorist spotted him and offered a much-needed lift for the final stretch. Against all odds, Jones arrived just in time to walk Elizabeth down the aisle, keeping the struggles of his journey a secret until later.
