On a poignant Tuesday afternoon in Bristol, Virginia, the community came together to honor the life and sacrifice of Deputy Sheriff Hunter Reedy. The atmosphere was heavy with respect and admiration as local law enforcement agencies, dedicated community members, and friends and family gathered for a solemn dedication ceremony held at the Southwest Virginia Criminal Justice Training Academy.
Deputy Reedy tragically lost his life in the line of duty on August 9, 2024. During the ceremony, his unwavering commitment to his community and his courageous service to Smyth County and the wider Southwest Virginia area were respectfully acknowledged. The event was not only a time to mourn but also a moment to celebrate the spirit of a dedicated law enforcement officer.
Among those who spoke at the event were Virginia Governor Glenn Youngkin, Virginia Attorney General Jason Miyares, and U.S. Congressman Morgan Griffith. Each speaker shared heartfelt words, commemorating Deputy Reedy’s legacy. Attorney General Miyares captured the essence of Reedy’s service with a powerful quote from George Orwell: “We sleep silently in our beds at night, because rough men stand ready, and if need be, do violence on those who would do us harm.” He continued, “That was Hunter. He was a watcher on the wall standing ready to protect his fellow man.”
Governor Youngkin poignantly noted, “There is an 85th name that is tragically added to the memorial behind me. But it’s an 85th name that will inspire others to their better selves.” The memorial wall, unveiled by members of the 110th Law Enforcement Basic Class, which included Deputy Reedy’s own graduating class, stands as a moving tribute to all officers who have made the ultimate sacrifice. The wall symbolizes unity and purpose within the law enforcement community.
Tim Tester, the executive director of the training academy, highlighted the significance of such events, stating, “It’s to help people understand the sacrifice these men and women that put on their badge every day and go into work knowing they may not come home, but yet they still go in and do it to serve their communities because they truly care about people.”
The ceremony was further enriched by musical performances from Renee Woods, who beautifully sang the National Anthem and “Amazing Grace”. Each note resonated deeply with those in attendance, enhancing the emotional atmosphere of the day.
As the ceremony concluded, a special dedication of a monument titled “Carved in Stone” was made to honor the life and ongoing impact of Deputy Reedy. In his tribute, Smyth County Sheriff Chip Shuler remarked, “It matters not the style of the badge he wore, only that he served with pride and honorably; all that matters is he was one of us…serving whenever needed.”
A generous act by Bojangles of Bristol ensured that all attendees enjoyed a warm lunch, further highlighting the strong community spirit that was palpable throughout the day. For those looking to support the memorial wall honoring fallen officers in the region, donations can be made to the Southwest Academy Training Foundation. Every contribution helps maintain this tribute, ensuring that the sacrifices made by our brave law enforcement officers are never forgotten.
As the sun began to set on this memorable day, it was clear that Deputy Sheriff Hunter Reedy’s legacy would continue to inspire and resonate throughout the community. His spirit, dedication, and courage will forever be etched in the hearts of those who knew him, and those who honor his memory.
