BRISTOL, Va. – What do you get when you mix laughter, community spirit, and a whole lot of heart? You get the amazing event that took place at the Axe and Ale House this past Saturday! The venue transformed into a haven of comedy for a special “Laughs for Relief” comedy show, organized to support the talented comedians from nearby Asheville, who found themselves displaced due to the devastating impacts of Hurricane Helene.
In a delightful twist, attendees didn’t buy their tickets in the usual fashion. Instead, they made a cash donation at the door, with all proceeds going directly to the Asheville-based comics who took the stage. It was a win-win situation: laughter filled the room, and the performers got much-needed support during a challenging time.
Among the performers, Comedian Evelyn Pekarek took a moment to share just how much this event meant to her and her fellow comedians. “I’m incredibly grateful for the Bristol comedy scene,” she shared. “It means the world to me. We’ve come together as a community, and community brings laughter.”
Pekarek reflected on her experiences back home in Asheville, where many venues suffered severe damage from flooding. “I performed a show in an old, decommissioned church with no microphone back home,” she recollected, bringing a smile to her face despite the challenges. “Bristol really showed up for me and is giving me back that feeling of being on stage.”
The enthusiasm in the air was palpable as attendees and performers alike came together to laugh and support one another. With many venues in Asheville still closed, opportunities for comics are scarce, making the support from Bristol all the more crucial.
Pekarek emphasized the importance of the community. “For me, being able to give back to the comics here is just a huge thing,” she noted, her appreciation evident. The hearts of Bristol’s residents certainly shined bright as they offered love, laughter, and support to their neighbors from Asheville.
But the “Laughs for Relief” comedy show wasn’t the only excitement at the Axe and Ale House. The venue also hosted a vibrant vintage night market alongside the comedy, creating a lively environment where local vendors showcased their unique products. It was the perfect setting for community members to come together, shop local, and enjoy a night filled with hilarious performances.
Events like these are a testament to the strength and resilience of community ties, especially in times of need. While Hurricane Helene may have caused disruption and chaos, it also ignited a spirit of togetherness and compassion among residents in Bristol and the surrounding regions.
As we’ve seen time and time again, laughter can be a powerful tool for healing. In the face of adversity, it’s heartwarming events like “Laughs for Relief” that remind us of the importance of supporting one another, sharing joy, and creating connections that truly matter.
So, here’s to laughter, resilience, and the continued strength of community bonds – and a special shoutout to Bristol for opening its arms to those in need!
