In a thrilling display of speed and determination, driver Christian Eckes surged to victory at the Weather Guard Truck Race on March 16, 2024. The event took place at Bristol Motor Speedway, Tennessee, and saw Eckes deny Kyle Busch with his impressive control over his No. 19 McAnally-Hilgemann Racing Chevrolet.
The New York racer built anticipation by securing the pole position at the start of the day. In a spectacular move, Eckes overtook Busch on the 159th lap of the 250-lap race. Over the remaining 91 circuits, a thrilling scrimmage unfroze between the two, with Eckes eventually claiming his sixth career NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series victory.
The 23-year-old underdog darted ahead of Busch on a late restart, managing a one-second lead with only eight laps to go. Pushing the limits, Busch made a fervent bid to catch up but fell short, trailing Eckes to the finish line.
This victory held special significance for Eckes, who began his journey in the truck series as a driver for Kyle Busch Motorsports in 2018. “We certainly raced each other as though there’s some kind of history between us,” Eckes expressed after the race. “It’s huge to beat Kyle. Especially here at Bristol, which has been like a home track for him.”
Befitting his reputation as the track’s all-time winner with 23 victories across NASCAR’s three national series, Busch bagged the first two stages of the race. However, when push came to shove, Eckes’ strategic prowess in the final stage clinched him the victory.
Zane Smith followed closely behind, contributing to a Chevrolet sweep of the top three positions. Matt Crafton, a three-time series champion, claimed fourth place in his Ford vehicle. The points leader, Tyler Ankrum, completed the top five in a Chevrolet.
However, the race was not without incident. A major accident on lap 144, involving Ty Majeski and defending series champion Ben Rhodes among others, slowed the race with six cautions. Tempers flared off the track too, as an altercation broke out in the pits between Stewart Friesen and Nick Sanchez after the race.
The NASCAR Cup Series will hold the torch next with the Food City 500. Meanwhile, the NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series will visit the road course at Circuit of the Americas in Austin, Texas for its subsequent race.
The Weather Guard Truck Race concluded with Christian Eckes in the lead, followed by Kyle Busch, Zane Smith, Matt Crafton, and Tyler Ankrum comprising the top five spots. Corey Heim and Taylor Gray clinched the sixth and seventh positions in Toyotas, while Chevys driven by Rajah Caruth and Grant Enfinger secured eight and ninth. Layne Riggs capped off the top ten finishers in a Ford vehicle.
