School Continues to Excel in Dual Enrollment Programs

In a move that showcases the education system’s commitment to innovative learning methods, seniors from four high schools in Carter County, Tennessee will be adding more than just their high school diplomas to their resumes. A total of 32 seniors will also be receiving their associate of science degrees from Northeast State Community College.

Interestingly, these students received their college degrees around ten days before their high school graduation ceremony on May 17 and May 18, making it a doubly joyous occasion for them and their families. Their remarkable academic achievement was not just an individual victory, but also gave Carter County School System reason to celebrate.

Carter County has a successful record in dual enrollment programs – an initiative through which high school students can earn college credits. For the academic year 2023-2024, the county held its position as being third in the state for the number of Board of Regents Middle College scholarships granted over the year. These scholarships totalling $189,584, place Carter County only behind Rutherford and Hamilton counties.

Putting Carter County on the Map

Thanks to the dual enrollment program, students have been able to take advantage of their time in high school to get a head start on their college education. Carter County high schools have consistently ranked high in the productivity of their dual enrollment initiatives, with this year seeing an impressive 32 students graduating with associate of science degrees. This achievement helps enhance Carter County School System’s reputation for its commitment to excellence in education.

In addition to the attainment in the number of degrees given, Carter County ranked third in the state for the total value of Board of Regents Middle College scholarships awarded during the year. The scholarships provided financial support to numerous students during their studies, allowing them to focus on their education fully.

The success of the dual enrollment program in Carter County is yet another testament to the effectiveness of such initiatives. By offering students an opportunity to earn college credits while still in high school, these programs help promote academic achievement, improve college readiness and reduce future college costs for families.

The 32 students that successfully earned their associate degrees ahead of their high school diplomas came from four high schools within Carter County.
