This past Friday afternoon, Kingsport was shaken by a devastating car accident that took the life of a young woman and left another person seriously injured. The Kingsport Police Department was called to the scene around 3 p.m. after reports of a collision with injuries in the 100 block of S. Wilcox Drive.
According to police reports, the incident involved a 2018 Toyota 4Runner and a 2011 Honda CRV. The Toyota was traveling southbound on S. Wilcox Drive when it was struck on the passenger side by the Honda. The investigation revealed that the Honda had just exited a gas station and entered the roadway, resulting in a direct hit to the Toyota.
The impact was severe enough that it caused the Toyota to overturn. Tragically, the driver and a passenger in the Toyota were not wearing their seatbelts, which contributed to their ejection from the vehicle during the collision. Witnesses at the scene expressed their shock, saying it all happened so quickly, leaving no time for anyone to react.
Authorities identified the driver of the Toyota as Cari Coates. She was rushed to a nearby hospital but sadly succumbed to her injuries shortly after arriving. Meanwhile, the passenger, who was also ejected during the crash, sustained serious injuries and is currently receiving ongoing treatment at the hospital. By all accounts, they were both full of life, making the news all the more heartbreaking.
On the other hand, the driver of the Honda was fortunate enough to avoid any injuries. However, a juvenile passenger in the Honda did suffer a non-life-threatening injury and is expected to recover.
The Kingsport Police Department has stated that their investigation is still active, as they strive to piece together how this tragic event unfolded. They are urging anyone who may have seen the crash or has additional information to come forward. The community has been shaken by this incident, reminding everyone of the importance of safety precautions while driving, especially the use of seat belts.
As friends and family grasp the reality of this tragic loss, the community is coming together to offer support. Local residents have been expressing their condolences and sharing memories of Cari and her passenger. Many remember them as vibrant, caring individuals who brought joy to those around them.
The sad event serves as a poignant reminder for all of us about the fragility of life and the importance of driving safely. As the investigation continues, our thoughts are with those affected and the loved ones they leave behind.
In light of this tragedy, it is essential for all drivers to remain vigilant and prioritize safety. Whether it’s adhering to traffic laws or ensuring every passenger is buckled up, we all play a part in preventing such heartbreaking incidents. Let’s honor Cari and all who suffer from similar circumstances by committing to safer driving habits and spreading awareness within our community.
