Canton Community Remembers Dr. William “Bill” Rolland, A Life of Dedication and Service

With heavy hearts, the community of Canton, North Carolina, is coming together to remember a beloved figure, Dr. William Woody “Bill” Rolland, who passed away peacefully on the morning of March 22, 2025. His remarkable journey began on June 8, 1931, when he was born in the serene backdrop of Buncombe County. Growing up in Canton, Bill quickly established himself as a cherished member of his community, attending Canton High School, where he nurtured his love for music by playing both the drum and tuba in the school band.

A Passion for Music and Service

During the turbulent times of World War II, Bill showed his commitment to honoring those who served by playing the snare drum at the gravesides of fallen service members. This early display of respect and dedication laid the foundational values that would guide him throughout his life.

Academic Excellence and Teaching Career

After graduating from Canton High School, Bill moved on to King College in Bristol, TN, earning his degree in 1953. However, his thirst for knowledge didn’t stop there. He pursued a PhD in Nuclear Physics at the prestigious Duke University before starting an impressive academic career. Bill’s innovative spirit shone through early on when he contributed to the construction of a telescope and observatory at King College alongside Dr. Ed Burke.

In 1968, Bill began a 43-year tenure at St. Andrews Presbyterian College in Laurinburg, NC, where he taught Physics, Mathematics, and Computer Science. He was committed to sharing his passion for science and education with countless students, leaving a mark that will endure for generations.

A Life of Faith and Community

Throughout his life, Bill remained a devoted Christian and a cherished member of Trinity Presbyterian Church in Laurinburg, NC. His faith journey included a remarkable service as a Commissioned Lay Pastor at Manly Presbyterian Church for around 27 years. Additionally, he spent the last 14 years as a member of Canton Presbyterian Church, where his warmth and genuine spirit touched many lives.

A Family Man

Alongside his successful career, Bill was a loving husband and father. He married his wife, Joy, and together they raised four wonderful children: Bill, George, Betsy, and John. Bill found immense joy in watching his family grow and thrive, and he leaves behind eight grandchildren and future great-grandchildren who will carry on his legacy. Sadly, he was preceded in death by Joy and his parents, George Ephraim “Eph” and Bessie Woody Rolland.
