Bristol, Virginia is buzzing with excitement as it prepares to welcome two fresh faces to the Bristol Virginia School Board this coming January. The newest members, Bill Hartley and Josh Slagle, secured their positions with almost identical vote counts in a recent election that saw three candidates vying for two seats.
The unofficial results revealed that Slagle garnered a total of 3,112 votes, just a hair ahead of Hartley, who received 3,110 votes. Each candidate captured approximately 36% of the total votes cast, while the incumbent, Frank Goodpasture III, came in third with 2,370 votes. Talk about a nail-biting finish!
Feeling absolutely elated, Slagle shared his thoughts on the election results, saying, “I feel great. I’m glad to have earned the confidence of people in the community who put their faith in me, that I might be the best person to represent their interests.” It’s clear that Slagle understands the weight of his new role and values the trust placed in him by the community.
On the other hand, Hartley, who has previously served two terms on the City Council, expressed his gratitude, saying, “I feel very honored and humbled. I appreciate all the support I received and thank the citizens of Bristol for voting for me.” Hartley is looking forward to tackling the challenges that lie ahead and making a positive impact in local education.
In addition to the exciting school board elections, the city council also held its elections, with incumbents like Mayor Becky Nave and Anthony Farnum running unopposed for re-election. Nave racked up 3,980 votes, while Farnum attained 3,536 votes. Both expressed their excitement about continuing their work for the city.
Nave expressed her joy by saying, “I’m very excited, very humbled to hear I got so many votes and am very excited to continue moving us forward.” She highlighted the positive direction the community has been heading in over the past few years. Meanwhile, Farnum looks forward to the ongoing projects they have in the works, stating, “I’m excited about being able to serve for another term. I think Mayor Nave and I know we have some good things going but we also have some things we’re working on.”
Although these unofficial results have generated plenty of enthusiasm, all results are pending certification by the city’s Electoral Board on Wednesday. Everyone in the community is eagerly awaiting the official announcement.
The elections not only brought changes to the school board but also showed the community’s engagement in local governance. Bristol residents truly had their say on who will represent them, showcasing their commitment to education and local leadership.
As the city gears up for these changes, there’s a sense of optimism hanging in the air. With new voices joining the school board and dedicated incumbents continuing their service, Bristol is ready to embark on another chapter. Just as Nave pointed out, “We’ve been moving in a good direction these past few years.”
As January approaches, all eyes will be on the newly elected officials who are set to take their places at the table. With fresh energy and perspectives, the future looks bright for Bristol, Virginia.
