In fact, a survey conducted by the Police Executive Research Forum found that officer resignations jumped a staggering 47% in 2022 compared to 2019, while retirements climbed by 19% during the same period.

Hiring for the Future

Despite these hurdles, Major Milligan remains hopeful. He emphasizes that being a police officer in Bristol can be a highly rewarding career, highlighting the competitive pay offered to those who join the force. New, non-certified officers can expect to start with a salary of $41,728, and once they complete their training at the police academy, their pay rises to $47,991.

“The priority here is always to ensure we have officers who are honest and possess integrity,” stated Major Milligan. “We need to find the right people—those who truly want to serve as police officers.” He goes on to share that despite the challenges, Bristol offers a vibrant and dynamic working environment. “We stay busy here; our call volume is higher than a lot of other places, but it’s still a very good place to work.”

Enhancing Downtown Safety

In a significant move to enhance community safety, the Bristol City Council recently approved funding for the addition of two new police officers who will work specifically in the downtown area. This is in addition to the lone officer already deployed to that bustling location.
