The city leaders of Bristol, Virginia have embarked on an aggressive recruitment mission to attract new industries to the community, with the goal of stimulating the local economy and enhancing the quality of life for its residents. Revitalizing the city through business growth remains a top priority.
“We are out here trying to actively recruit all types of industries – technology, healthcare,” said local city council member, Anthony Farnum. Acknowledging the challenges of the initiative, he shares, “It’s fun, it’s different every day, and sometimes, we have some wins — sometimes we have some losses.”
City council member, Neal Osborne, sees potential in the city’s evolution. According to Osborne, “We are always looking for places in the city where we can market new businesses and help out small business owners — attract new businesses that may bring something very unique and new to the city.”
Locations earmarked for business accumulation include downtown areas, The Falls, and along Gate City Highway. While there are a number of vacant buildings, particularly in the downtown area, city leaders contend that this is not currently a concern. They perceive such vacancies as opportunities for new enterprises to establish their operations.
Mayor Becky Nave, a key protagonist in the city’s growth push, emphasizes the city’s supportive role in connecting businesses and property owners. She said, “Those buildings downtown have individual property owners, and so we really don’t have much control over that. However, we can put businesses and prospects in connection with those business owners to hopefully get somebody in those.”
When questioned about Bristol’s attractiveness to businesses, city officials held out Bristol as a growing city with a vibrant downtown area. Mayor Nave claimed, “Even with some businesses going in and out, it’s still vibrant, one of the best downtowns in the nation.”
Despite experiencing shifts in the business landscape, council member Farnum remains optimistic about the city’s future, pointing out that as some stores close, others open, reflecting the dynamic nature of the business sector.
With strong leadership advocating for continuous investment in the local economy, attracting new businesses to Bristol is a clear focus for policymakers in the city. The proactive steps taken by city leaders signal a favourable environment for businesses considering Bristol as their new home. As Bristol continues to grow and adapt, its future appears strong, promising potential prosperity and growth for its businesses and residents.
