It’s a heartwarming scene in Bristol, Tennessee/Virginia, where local businesses and community members are banding together to support those affected by Hurricane Helene. With the recent devastation hitting so close to home, the spirit of giving is alive as everyone pitches in to lend a helping hand to their neighbors in need.
Kelli Jo Nuckles, the owner of Healing Hydration, is one of the leaders in this relief effort. “Seeing a disaster unfold right in our backyard has been devastating,” she shared. Kelli, who has extensive experience as a travel nurse and in emergency management, is now utilizing her skills closer to home. She’s been coordinating donations from all corners of the community, whether they come by car or even plane!
But the need goes beyond just food and water. Kelli has also gathered essential medications—like EpiPens, antibiotics, and insulin—and delivered them to those in desperate need in western North Carolina. “It’s heartbreaking to hear that people are facing bee stings on top of everything else. They can’t find EpiPens, and it’s causing unnecessary problems on top of all the other struggles,” she lamented.
While Kelli’s efforts are crucial, she’s not alone. Several other local businesses are teaming up to provide food and supplies. Bristol Bagel & Bakery, Blackbird Bakery, Southern Churn, and Blended Pedaler are all planning a food distribution event in Damascus on Thursday, October 10th. They’ll be set up at the car wash on Main Street from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.
Rebekah Napier, the store manager at Bristol Bagel & Bakery, expressed the sentiment shared among the businesses involved: “We wanted to help, and it was the best way for us to pitch in. Bringing everyone together during challenging times is what it’s all about.” Many people feel the same way—coming together to support those who need it most is a top priority right now.
Adding a cheerful touch to the relief efforts is the Blended Pedaler, which has cleverly started a pumpkin patch at their on-the-go location at Exit 7 in Bristol. With fall in the air, they’ve decided that a little pumpkin painting could not only lift spirits but also help raise funds for local children impacted by the hurricane.
Owner Lauren Griffin excitedly shared, “Proceeds from the pumpkin patch will go to buy Christmas presents for kids who were displaced or lost their toys in the flood.” The pumpkin patch will be open on Friday and Saturday, and customers can enjoy a creative outing for $25, getting two small pumpkins or one large pumpkin to paint, along with a complimentary superfood bowl or smoothie.
The importance of community ties can’t be overstated during tough times. Emily Linder, a manager at Blended Pedaler, emphasized, “It’s important for all of us to stick together, whether it’s 50 miles away or 100 miles away. The impact in Damascus is significant, and we want to show that all the small businesses in Bristol are working together to help in any way we can.” It is through acts of kindness and collaboration that hope and healing can begin.
Locals interested in supporting these efforts can donate items directly to participating businesses, or stop by to join in on the fun at the pumpkin patch. Whether it’s through donating supplies, sharing a meal, or enjoyably painting pumpkins, every little bit helps to heal the wounds created by this disaster.
As Bristol residents join forces to provide assistance, they are proving that even in the face of adversity, the power of community can shine bright. Together, they are making a meaningful difference for those impacted by Hurricane Helene, spreading love and support throughout their beautiful Appalachian mountains.
