Teachers in Bristol, Tennessee had the unique opportunity to step out of their classrooms and dive into local industries. This past Monday, educators participated in the annual Teacher Industry Day, an event designed to give them an in-depth understanding of the various career paths available to their students.
This year was particularly special as it marked the first time the event was opened to all teachers in the school district. Teachers gathered at Tennessee High School for an introductory program before heading out to visit a variety of local businesses and industries. Katherine Lamie, a teacher from Tennessee Middle School, was among the educators who took part in the day’s events. Lamie, who teaches a STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math) class, was particularly excited about touring Bristol Tennessee Essential Services (BTES) with her group. “I was excited that we actually got the opportunity to do this because I teach a STEM class,” said Lamie. “Being able to link my classroom to what they do here at BTES is a fantastic opportunity.”
The tour at BTES was highly relevant to Lamie’s curriculum, as her students work extensively with electricity and circuitry. She noted how invaluable it was to see firsthand what skills and knowledge are needed to succeed in the electrical services industry. “Anytime you can bring an industry into your classroom and show them that it’s actually something real that you’re teaching, it’s a fantastic thing for the kids,” she added.
Expanding Career Horizons for Students
During the Teacher Industry Day, educators are given the chance to see various industries up close, providing them with the insights they need to advise their students about potential career options. Teachers from the school system paired with companies from 32 different industries, ranging from healthcare to manufacturing, and even tech businesses.
By connecting with these companies, teachers can better guide their students towards local opportunities that align with their interests and skills. “It’ll give them an opportunity to see local places that we can guide our students towards in the future with whatever career that they are looking into,” said Lamie.
