A New Approach to Law Enforcement

During a recent Bristol Tennessee City Council session, Police Chief Matt Austin passionately discussed this new program. “They’ll be facing various challenges… mental health concerns, substance abuse issues, domestic violence situations, and homelessness,” he explained. The idea is to have the social worker embedded in the department where their office will be situated on-site. What’s more, the social worker won’t just be available for advice – they will be actively involved in the situations that arise.

Collaboration for a Common Goal

This innovative initiative is a collaborative effort between the police department and Frontier Health. Initially, they sought grant funding for this project. Though that didn’t go as planned, the folks over at Frontier Health stepped up to contribute funding for one social worker position. “They were excited about the program and what we were trying to do,” said Chief Austin. Now, that’s what we call community spirit!

Improving Response Times

With the social worker on board, officers will be able to conduct health assessments directly at the scene, helping to eliminate the need for long waits in emergency rooms. Chief Austin mentioned that these mental health social workers could even facilitate direct admissions from the field. Talk about efficiency!

One exciting aspect is the existing rapport that the police already have with folks they encounter in the community. Chief Austin noted, “A lot of those times, we have contact with those people multiple, multiple times.” With the social worker’s assistance, referrals for services can be made quickly to ensure individuals get the help they need, thus reducing the number of repeat calls associated with the same people.

Looking Ahead

As we look towards the future, Chief Austin has grand plans for this innovative project. His long-term vision is to have a social worker on each shift – sounds ambitious, right? But with determination in his voice, he said, “You gotta crawl before you can walk, and walk before you can run.”

As we progress into 2024, the social worker will officially start working with the department in January.
