City of Bristol, Tennessee Honors Heroic Sullivan County Corrections Officer

Bristol, Tennessee, a city known for its rich traditions and deep sense of community, found itself applauding in unison on a recent Tuesday evening. The city council and the police department honored Sullivan County Corrections Officer Sergeant Samantha Davis, a heroine who had displayed astonishing bravery during a robbery attempt.

Acknowledging Extraordinary Bravery

Acting Police Chief Matt Austin, presiding over the ceremony, emphasized the importance of honoring those who display exceptional dedication to their duties. According to Austin, Davis’ actions reflected an intense commitment to serve and protect her community, often risking her own life to maintain peace and order.

“We need to recognize those that go above and beyond, and working at it together,” Chief Austin remarked. Davis, overwhelmed by this recognition from a department other than her own, responded, “I wasn’t expecting anything and I really did it because it’s my job, it’s my duty, it’s what I signed up for, to serve and protect the community.”

Reliving the Heroic Event

On that fateful day in March, Davis was making a routine stop at a gas station for an energy drink before reporting for duty. Little did she know, her quick thinking and courageous spirit would soon be tested. As she entered the store, she noticed a man trying to rob the store and jumped into action.

“Without hesitation, to jump in to the danger that was there. To protect those that are around her and around that were still at the store at the time,” said Chief Austin, recounting Davis’ heroics. Davis modestly recollected, “To get my own recognition from my own department is awesome, but for them (BTPD) to take the time to recognize something from a different department means a lot to me and a lot to the sheriff’s department.”

A Family Celebration

Perhaps one of the most touching moments of the evening was seeing Davis surrounded by members of her family, her co-workers from the Sullivan County Sheriff’s department, and most importantly – her children. Seeing their mother being honored for her bravery, it was a moment for her children to cherish and be proud of.

“To have my babies here is just like the best thing in the entire world, to do this for them, so they can see this when they get older, and be proud of their mom,” Davis said, a broad smile illuminating her face with pride and joy.

An Example to Follow

As the event came to a close, there was a palpable sense of admiration for Davis in the room. Her bravery and commitment to her role as a corrections officer didn’t just save a life that day but also set an example of selfless dedication and courage for others to emulate.
