Bristol Plans to Widen Lee Highway to Streamline Traffic and Boost Business Growth

Date: 22 May 2024

Extensive Renovation Project to Alleviate Traffic Congestion

The city of Bristol, Virginia, has unveiled plans for a comprehensive revamp of a significant section of Lee Highway. This renovation primarily aims at addressing the prevailing traffic congestion by widening the highway from its current four lanes to six.

As part of this project, ramps for Exit 5, both north and southbound, will be expanded along with a small section of Island Road. “This is primarily a roadway widening project now. But it’s essential due to increased traffic flow during peak hours,” said the city engineer for Bristol, with bustling vehicular activity particularly notable during office hours.

Upgrades to Support Local Businesses

The authorities believe that these improvements will significantly enhance local business prospects. The improvements to the highways and related infrastructure are being made in anticipation of increased traffic owing to the expansion of The Falls, a local shopping precinct.

“If you are a business developer scouting for potential locations, getting caught in a traffic jam or having difficulty reaching your potential site can leave a bad impression. These improvements will facilitate smoother traffic flow, making our city a more attractive prospect for businesses,” a city council member noted.

Funding and Completion

The cost of this extensive project will be covered entirely by state funds. As Lee Highway is classified as a significant thorougfare, all cost involved in renovation qualify for VDOT reimbursement.
The specific cost estimates for this project are currently confidential and will only be shared upon the receipt of bids from qualified contractors.

The project is expected to be completed by February 2026 consequently stimulating business growth and improving the overall commuting experience for the locals.
