Bristol, Tenn. – The residents of Bristol are grappling with the aftermath of a significant fire that devastated a part of their community over the weekend. Early Saturday morning, fire departments were called to respond to a fire that broke out at Fumadores Bar and Lounge on West State Street. Despite prompt action from the fire crews, the damage was extensive, leaving the building encircled in police tape and an air of uncertainty hanging over the neighborhood.
A local patron of Fumadores and the adjacent Zarati’s, Timothy Whitaker, learned about the fire while he was hospitalized and made a visit to the site soon after being discharged on Tuesday. “I was sad and shocked when I saw the damage,” he expressed with a heavy heart, standing by the charred structure.
According to Whitaker, the loss goes beyond the building itself. “This is a big loss for them, but I know they’re going to come back stronger,” he added. **Fumadores** has been a beacon of support within the community, stepping in to help people in need and hosting free meet-and-greets with artists like Jelly Roll.
Next door, **Imperial Dent Removal** shows signs of significant internal damage. The business’s owner, Lew Freeman, received an alarming call from his landlord while away on Saturday. “[The fire] came through the wooden partition and then set my stuff on fire, and continued to spread through the building,” Freeman recounted. Within three hours, firefighters had inundated the building with over a million gallons of water, further damaging his tools, cars, and wrestling equipment.
Freeman lamented the condition of some of his prized possessions, including a favorite old Honda he had painstakingly restored. **Imperial Pro Wrestling’s** gear was among the casualties, with storage areas holding everything from speakers to microphones, ring padding, chairs, concession stand supplies, lights, and entryways now ruined. “Every bit of that’s gone.”
On the positive side, Freeman has found incredible support from the wrestling community worldwide. “I’ve had wrestling promotions from literally across the world reach out and let me know that we don’t need to cancel the event,” he revealed. Though their next event was initially scheduled for September 21st, plans are forging ahead despite the setbacks.
Freeman is now rallying to fundraise, estimating the damages at between **$100,000 and $150,000**. Unfortunately, Freeman acknowledged that his current insurance setup, due to his lack of knowledge about insurance complexities, doesn’t cover much besides the cars. “Other than like the cars that are insured, I’m in trouble,” he admitted.
As Freeman embarks on recovery efforts, he emphasized the community’s role in their operations. “We want to get back up as quick as possible because a family that attends our shows’ house could burn down tomorrow and they’re going to call us and see if we can help.”
Despite extensive outreach, the Bristol Police Department has not provided any updates regarding the fire investigation as of Tuesday. The investigation continues as the community rallies around the affected businesses, lending a helping hand and encouraging words.
The spirit of resilience is palpable in Bristol. Business owners like Freeman, and patrons like Whitaker, are determined to rebuild and support one another through the trying times. Only time will tell how quickly these beloved establishments get back on their feet, but the community’s faith in their recovery is undoubtedly unwavering.
The rebuilding process is sure to be challenging, but with community support and strong determination, Bristol will undoubtedly emerge from this disaster stronger than ever.
