As Hurricane Milton heads toward Florida, President Joe Biden has publicly addressed the surge of disinformation concerning the government’s response to recent hurricanes. At a recent press event, Biden stated that these “irresponsible and relentless promotions of disinformation and outright lies” are damaging public confidence in rescue and recovery efforts.
Since Hurricane Helene caused extensive damage across several states, false claims regarding the government’s disaster relief efforts have been increasing. With Florida bracing for another hurricane, the spread of misleading information has taken on a new urgency. In particular, remarks by former President Donald Trump and his supporters have drawn significant attention.
Trump has criticized the Biden-Harris administration’s response, claiming that money allocated for disaster victims has instead been diverted to help undocumented migrants. For example, at a rally in Michigan, Trump said, “Kamala spent all her FEMA money – billions of dollars – on housing for illegal migrants.” This has been shown to be false. The Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) has a specific Disaster Relief Fund which amounts to over $20 billion designated for hurricane and natural disaster responses. Additionally, a separate budget allocated by Congress for supporting immigrants totals around $1 billion over the last two years, clearly separating the two funding sources.
FEMA has addressed Trump’s claims directly by setting up a fact-checking page on its website. In a statement, they indicated, “no money is being diverted from disaster response needs.” They highlighted an instance from 2019 when funds were indeed diverted from FEMA’s relief funding during Trump’s presidency to support other agencies, a point that further complicates the narrative being pushed by some Republican figures.
Trump and his running mate, JD Vance, have been vocal about the financial aid given to Hurricane Helene victims, often pointing out the reported $750 payment from FEMA. While this amount is indeed correct and is an upfront payment to help cover basic needs, it is important to understand that this is just a small portion of the total assistance available. Victims can receive additional funds to cover housing repairs and other costs after an assessment by FEMA.
So far, FEMA has reported distributing upwards of $210 million to communities affected by Hurricane Helene, indicating proactive support for impacted areas.
During a recent rally, Trump claimed that Georgia’s governor had not been able to communicate with President Biden about the needs in the state following the hurricane. However, Governor Brian Kemp clarified that the President had reached out and asked what resources the state needed, demonstrating a collaborative effort from the federal level.
Trump also stated that North Carolina residents were lacking necessary rescue efforts, implying a disconnect between the federal leadership and state response initiatives. However, the North Carolina National Guard had already been active with helicopter missions, having rescued hundreds of people and pets by the time those comments were made. The state’s governor had requested military assistance from the President, which was approved in a timely manner.
As Hurricane Milton approaches, the landscape is fraught with both natural and human-made challenges. Disinformation continues to swirl around the federal response to hurricane relief efforts, fueled largely by political discourse in the run-up to the election. With critical information on hurricane support being misrepresented, it is important for residents and Americans as a whole to seek accurate updates directly from official sources. The situations in Florida, Georgia, and North Carolina demonstrate the intricate balance of emergency management and the potential repercussions of misinformation when communities need comprehensive support following disaster events.
