Former NASA Astronaut José Hernández to Share Life Story in Kingsport

Kingsport – Get ready to be inspired! On Thursday, Sept. 26, former NASA astronaut José Hernández will be making a special appearance in Kingsport to talk about his incredible journey from the fields of California to the vastness of space.

Hernández’s life story isn’t just remarkable; it’s a testament to the power of grit and determination. Many may know him from the Amazon Prime biopic “A Million Miles Away” released in 2023, which depicted his awe-inspiring climb from migrant farmworker to NASA astronaut. This event is a perfect fit for Eastman’s ongoing celebration of Hispanic Heritage Month (September 15-October 15), and it’s sure to leave attendees feeling motivated and uplifted.

The event titled “Reaching For Your Own Stars: A Recipe To Success” will be held at 6 p.m. at the Toy F. Reid Employee Center on 400 S. Wilcox Drive, Kingsport. The best part? Admission is absolutely free, although you are encouraged to register in advance!

Hernández’s visit is being organized by Mosaic, Eastman’s resource group for Hispanic and Latino team members and their allies. The event is also getting a promotional boost from the Kingsport Chamber of Commerce and various Young Professionals groups from Kingsport, Bristol, Johnson City, and Greene County.

According to Willie McLain, Eastman’s chief financial officer and Mosaic’s executive sponsor, “José Hernández’s story of perseverance, resilience, and dreaming big aligns perfectly with Eastman’s values and our innovation-driven growth strategy.” He further added, “We are honored to host him and look forward to the inspiration and insights he will share with our community.”

About José Hernández

Born in California to a family of Mexican migrant farmworkers, Hernández’s early years were tough. He began working in the fields alongside his parents from a young age and had to constantly switch schools due to the nature of his family’s work. Despite these obstacles, Hernández was determined to succeed academically, even though he didn’t learn to speak English until he was 12 years old.

The work ethic he developed while laboring in the hot California fields paid off handsomely when he reached college. Hernández excelled in his studies and his graduate work in electrical engineering helped him land a prestigious job at Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory. It was there that he co-developed an x-ray laser and the world’s first full-field digital mammography system, which plays a critical role in early breast cancer detection.

But Hernández’s eyes were always set on the stars. Ever since he watched Eugene Cernan walk on the moon as part of the Apollo 17 mission, he dreamt of becoming an astronaut. Despite being rejected by NASA a staggering 11 times, his persistence finally paid off when he was selected as a member of NASA’s 19th class of astronauts in 2004.

In 2009, Hernández journeyed into space as a flight engineer on the STS-128 mission aboard the Space Shuttle Discovery. During the mission, he took on crucial tasks, including operating the robotic arm. Adding another feather to his cap, Hernández became the first person to tweet in Spanish from space.

José Hernández’s achievements go beyond his time at NASA. He is the founder of the aerospace consulting firm Tierra Luna Engineering, LLC. Fascinatingly, he also owns a 20-acre vineyard that bottles wine under the Tierra Luna Cellar label. Moreover, he is an author, motivational speaker, and an ardent supporter of STEM education.

Don’t Miss This Unique Opportunity

The event isn’t just for those enthralled by space travel – it’s for anyone looking for a dose of pure inspiration. It’s a chance to hear a real-life hero recount a journey that defies the odds and celebrates human spirit and endeavor.

So mark your calendars and make your way to the Toy F. Reid Employee Center on September 26 for an evening that promises to be out of this world. Remember, while the event is free, don’t forget to register in advance to secure your spot!

This promises to be an evening filled with wisdom, life’s lessons, and the encouraging words from someone who never stopped dreaming, no matter how distant the stars seemed. Whether you’re deeply interested in astronomy, science, or simply need a motivational boost, this event is set to be an unforgettable experience.
