Celebrate Arbor Day in Johnson City with a Tree Giveaway

This past Saturday, April 5, 2025, Johnson City came alive with the spirit of nature as it hosted its annual Arbor Day tree giveaway event. The gathering took place at the ever-popular Metro-Kiwanis Park, located at 817 Guaranda Drive. As residents arrived at the park, excitement lingered in the air, with many eager families ready to take home a piece of nature.

A Seedling Bonanza Awaits

The tree giveaway kicked off promptly at 9 a.m. and continued until every last seedling was claimed. Approximately 3,000 tree seedlings were available, featuring a delightful selection of trees like the stunning Redbud, elegant White Dogwood, vibrant Red Maple, and even the unique Pawpaw. Residents were thrilled to learn that the seedlings were offered on a first-come, first-served basis, creating a buzz of anticipation among the crowd.

Sharing the Green

Celebrating a Greener Future

Since 2010, Johnson City has gone above and beyond in planting trees, having distributed nearly 40,000 trees as part of its Arbor Day festivities. This initiative reflects the city’s long-standing dedication to maintaining its Tree City USA designation for an incredible 25 years. Achieving this designation involves meeting necessary criteria, such as having an Arbor Day observance, a dedicated tree ordinance, a tree board or department, and a budget allocated for tree maintenance and planting.

Community Spirit Shines Bright

Leading the charge this year was City Forester Pat Walding, who organized the event along with the help of wonderful volunteers like Alan Markland. Together, they ensured that everyone who lined up got their hands on some green goodies. Community members, including enthusiastic local residents like Morgan Carr and Seth Thomas, were spotted eagerly awaiting their turn, ready to add some new trees to their properties.

Rain or Shine, the Trees Prevail

Despite the weather forecast hinting at cloudy skies, periods of rain, and a high of 67°F with a 100% chance of rain, spirits remained high. Families and individuals alike braved the elements, proving that for the love of trees, a little drizzle wasn’t going to dampen their day. The camaraderie among the residents of Johnson City was a heartwarming sight, showcasing how tree planting can unite a community.

Looking Ahead

As the event wrapped up, and all seedlings found loving homes, the tree giveaway served as a delightful reminder of the importance of preserving our environment for future generations. Planting trees is not just about beautifying our neighborhoods; it’s also about creating a healthier planet.

Thanks to initiatives like this, Johnson City is not just a place to live; it’s a community that values nature and works tirelessly to create a greener future. So, if you missed out on this year’s event, don’t worry! Keep your eyes peeled for more opportunities to plant some trees and give back to the environment.

Until next year, let’s keep the spirit of Arbor Day alive in our hearts, every day, and continue to make Johnson City bloom!
