Elizabethton, TN – Big things are happening in the heart of Carter County! On December 5, 2024, local leaders came together to celebrate the groundbreaking of the brand new Carter County Higher Education Center, a remarkable $40 million project aimed at expanding educational opportunities for residents in the region. With an enthusiastic crowd gathered at 386 Highway 91-N, the atmosphere was filled with excitement and optimism about the future.
A Collaborative Effort
The new center represents a fantastic partnership between Northeast State Community College and TCAT Elizabethton, reflecting a shared commitment to serve the educational needs of Northeast Tennessee. Tennessee Board of Regents Chancellor Flora W. Tydings couldn’t have said it better: “The new Carter County Higher Education Center underscores how Northeast State and TCAT Elizabethton work together to serve the people of Northeast Tennessee.”
Tydings also highlighted that this center is part of a larger initiative that includes 29 major projects across the state, backed by a staggering $1.5 billion in state investments over the past two years. This demonstrates a serious commitment from the state government towards enhancing academic, career, and technical education for communities like Carter County.

What’s in Store? A Major Upgrade!
This ambitious project is not just about aesthetics—it will provide about 71,000 gross square feet of new space, which will include everything from high-bay training spaces to state-of-the-art laboratories, classrooms, and even administrative and student support areas. These enhancements will support a variety of academic programs and hands-on instruction, setting the stage for countless success stories!
The new facility is anticipated to be up and running by fall 2026 and Thompson & Litton, an architectural, engineering, and land surveying firm based in Wise, Virginia, is in charge of the design. The excitement is building, and the community can’t wait to see the impactful changes taking shape.
