This delay is largely because the bridge’s foundation still needs to be examined, and the Doe River hasn’t receded enough to conduct a proper scour inspection. To add to the efforts, a dive team is expected to perform an underwater inspection as soon as it can be arranged.
This closure creates a significant bottleneck for traffic, particularly in downtown Elizabethton. With the eastern end of Broad Street effectively cut off, locals are being funneled toward East Elk Avenue, which is handling an influx of vehicles. This week, the local hustle and bustle caught the attention of the Small Business Administration (SBA). The agency’s director, Isabel Guzman, along with her team, stopped by downtown Elizabethton. Logan Engle, the Assistant City Manager, shared that they were there to provide assistance to businesses struggling due to hurricane-related flooding. During her visit, Guzman was made aware of the heavy traffic issues stemming from the bridge closure, leading to a vibrant and busy downtown atmosphere.
“There was a gaggle of people everywhere!” Engle added with enthusiasm, noting that despite the challenges, the increased traffic could be an opportunity to highlight local businesses.
Supporting Small Businesses
Engle and Courtney Bean, director of Main Street Elizabethton, visited several local spots, including Tweetsie Trailing Ice Cream Company and Riverside Taphouse, both of which felt the impact of flooding. The flood damage is proving to be not only a financial burden for these businesses but will also affect any upcoming events in the downtown area.
Bean is working hard to find alternatives for maintaining community festivities that have historically relied on the closure of East Elk Avenue. As of Friday, she was busy in meetings aimed at developing plans for future events, demonstrating the city’s commitment to keeping the community spirit alive.
Overcoming Roadblocks for Repairs
While TDOT is making headway on repairing and rebuilding damaged roads, they are facing unexpected obstacles. Some private property owners have been hesitant to sign a necessary permission form for TDOT crews to use their land to park equipment—creating a delay in crucial repairs. TDOT has issued a “NOT A SCAM” alert, clarifying that this form simply grants officials access to private properties for essential work.
