Johnson City Unites in Response to Catastrophic Floods

Community Resilience in Action

Johnson City Rallies Together After Devastating Floods

Hey there, Johnson City! If you’ve been keeping up with local news, you might have heard about the catastrophic floods that have recently impacted our beautiful East Tennessee region. It has truly been a trying time for many families and individuals, but I want to share some updates that can help us all band together during this tough period.

ETSU Step Up to Support the Community

Our very own East Tennessee State University (ETSU) has taken immediate action in response to the disaster. On Sunday, the university made the decision to cancel all classes through Wednesday. This was a crucial step to ensure that students, staff, and faculty could focus on their loved ones, many of whom are facing significant hardships due to the floods.

ETSU President Dr. Brian Noland expressed the university’s commitment by stating, “We want to offer our students and employees maximum flexibility during this difficult time.” Isn’t that just a heartwarming sentiment? As many in our area are experiencing colossal losses, ETSU is committed to being a resource for those in need.

Flexibility for Employees

Another positive piece of news is the university’s understanding toward staff. Employees who are unable to make it to work due to personal challenges, including helping out loved ones affected by the floods, won’t be penalized or forced to use their leave hours. This flexibility allows everyone to tackle their individual situations without added stress.

Collecting Donations: The Power of Giving

While classes are on hold, the campus is stepping up as a hub for donations. ETSU is serving as a collection site for flood buckets and hygiene kits. Starting now and running through the week, donations will be accepted on the third floor of the Culp Center. Just remember, every little bit helps!

If you’re wondering what exactly qualifies as a flood bucket, here’s a quick rundown: Each bucket should be a 5-gallon round bucket with a resealable lid packed with cleaning supplies like clothespins, health-duty trash bags, N-95 masks, and laundry detergent, to name a few. As for hygiene kits, they should include items like hand towels, sturdy combs, nail clippers, and some essential toiletries.

Even better, if you want to join in the giving spirit while having some fun, you can drop off your donations at the homecoming football game on October 5. They’ll have a designated tent in the tailgate area accepting donations starting at 1 PM. Grab your friends, enjoy the game, and lend a hand to those in need!

Blood Drive and Letters of Support

In addition to collecting supplies, the university is also hosting a community blood drive in collaboration with Marsh Regional Blood Center. This event is scheduled for both Monday and Tuesday from 10 AM until 6 PM in the Culp Ballroom on the third floor of the student center. Donating blood can make a huge difference for those affected and it’s a great way to give back!

And that’s not all – while you’re there, you can also participate in writing letters of support for both the individuals impacted by the flooding and the brave first responders working tirelessly during this crisis. Let’s fill some hearts with love while we help out!

Staying Connected

In a time like this, it’s essential to stay connected and support one another. So, whether you’re donating supplies, giving blood, or simply lending a listening ear, we can all play a part in healing our community. The spirit of Johnson City is strong, and together, we can overcome even the toughest of times.

Stay safe, everyone, and let’s keep lifting each other up!
