Sullivan Receives $53,170 in Federal Funding to Bolster Food and Shelter Programs
The Sullivan County, located in Kingsport, has been awarded a major federal grant in order to bolster local food and shelter programs. A hefty sum of $53,170, part of Phase 41 funding, will be utilized to improve and extend emergency food and shelter programs across the county. The funding comes as the result of the county’s selection by a national board, headed by the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA), under the Emergency Food and Shelter National Board Program.
Local Agencies Urged to Apply
The United Way of Greater Kingsport is encouraging local agencies to file applications for funds distribution. Under the guidelines of the grant, prospective agencies must adhere to specific conditions in order to be eligible. They need to be voluntary, non-profit private entities or government units, must have the capability to administer emergency food and shelter programs, and must be eligible for receiving Federal Funds. In addition, agencies must have an efficient accounting system, practice non-discrimination and should have a voluntary board if they are a private voluntary organization.
Meals, Lodging, and Utility Assistance Programs Set to Benefit
Previous recipients of the Emergency Food and Shelter funds include the likes of Meals on Wheels of Kingsport, Waverly Road Presbyterian Church Food Pantry, Salvation Army-Bristol, Salvation Army-Kingsport, UETHDA, Family Promise of Greater Kingsport and Second Harvest Food Bank. These organizations were pivotal in their roles to provide meals, lodging, and utility assistance to local communities. Now, with the injection of this latest round of funding, they are set to enhance their initiatives and extend their reach even further.

Public or private voluntary agencies who are interested in applying for the Emergency Food and Shelter Program, and who align with the conditions stipulated for qualification, are now invited to apply.
