Sullivan Commissioners to Consider Improvements for Observation Knob Park
The Sullivan County Commission is set to deliberate the approval of significant capital improvements at Observation Knob Park. The resolution, as highlighted during the commission’s recent work session meeting by Commissioner David Hayes, would give the green light for $80,000 from the park’s generated revenues to be directed towards capital improvements.
Observation Knob Park, which sits along South Holston Lake, has yielded an impressive $120,830 more than its operational expenses over recent years. With this surplus revenue flowing into the county’s general fund, the commission holds the responsibility to decide the appropriation of these funds.
Identified Park Improvement Needs
In collaboration with park management, the county’s Observation Knob Park Committee has flagged several areas in need of enhancements. Among these include a new boat dock proposed to be set up at the park’s boat ramp at an expected cost of $28,267.
Moreover, additional park furniture is planned. This includes 20 new picnic tables, four recreation benches, four trash bins, two pet waste stations, and an information center, estimated to tally up to $25,913. The commission also seeks to improve infrastructure around the park with new fencing around the playground and a new section for a dog park, projected to cost $21,100.
In an effort to better the visitor experience, one of the park’s bathhouses is also set to receive new commercial toilets, urinals, sinks, mirrors, and hand dryers at a cost of around $2,794.43. Furthermore, new roofing materials for the bathhouse from Lyons Metal in Piney Flats might also add up to around $3,500, according to the proposed resolution.
Achieving a Consensus
The Sullivan County Commission discussed the resolution during their work session meeting. The commission also explored the status of Observation Knob Park currently being leased from the Tennessee Valley Authority. Over recent years, efforts have been made to better the park’s condition and find ways to boost revenues.
Several commissioners expressed their pleasure with the progress made at Observation Knob so far. The resolution is set to be moved to the agenda of the next Sullivan County Commission meeting on March 21 for its final approval.
According to Commissioner David Hayes, the updates are all much needed to improve the park’s conditions and attract more visitors. This investment could be a beneficial move towards increasing profits from the park and providing better recreational facilities for the local community.
