Elizabethton, a spirited city known for its close-knit community and vibrant local culture, has just wrapped up a bustling 2024 general election. Voters showed up in droves, making their voices heard by returning two incumbents and welcoming a fresh face to the City Council. With ballots cast and results in, it’s time to take a closer look at what this election means for the city’s future!
The star of the show this election season is none other than Deb Gouge. Gearing up for her first political foray, Gouge led the election ticket for one of three open seats with an impressive 3,187 votes. Having dedicated 37 years to the local education system as a fine arts chair and choral director, Gouge is ready to bring her experience to the table.
In a heartfelt statement, Gouge expressed her gratitude, saying, “I’m just honored to represent the city that raised me and employed me. I don’t have an agenda; I just want to give back.” With a focus on recovery following recent flooding, she emphasized the importance of unity within the community: “We can’t remain fractured; we have to work together.”
As she gets ready to take on her new role, Gouge happily shared her preparation: “I’ve read the entire Elizabethton City Charter—just a little light reading!” She seems more than ready to hit the ground running!
Returning to the Council is Kim Birchfield, who, despite some hurdles involving health challenges—specifically a broken femur—managed to secure 2,719 votes. “This election has been a challenge,” Birchfield admitted, adding that he appreciated the support of his family and community. “I will do the very best job for them for the next four years that I can.” His resilience inspires many in the community!
Another familiar face, Jeff Treadway, also secured his spot on the Council with 2,334 votes. Treadway, who has been involved with various community boards since he first joined the Council in 2012, is excited about the upcoming projects he plans to help bring to life: “We have several beneficial projects underway, and I will work diligently to see them completed for the benefit of our beautiful and special part of God’s creation.”
The election results also saw the return of Richard Tester, who garnered 2,128 votes. Tester’s political journey has its twists and turns—previously serving on the City Council before being unseated in 2018, he’s now back and ready to make a difference.
The community is buzzing with energy as these new and returning members prepare to take on their responsibilities. Formal swearing-in ceremonies for the City Council are set for noon on November 26 at City Hall. Following this, a meeting will decide the new mayor and mayor pro tem, filling crucial leadership roles for the city.
It’s worth noting that previous Mayor Curt Alexander, who has been a staple in Elizabethton’s politics for the past two decades, chose not to run again. This leads to a significant shift as the council embraces new leadership dynamics and vibrant ideas.
As the dust settles from this exciting election, one thing is clear: the future of Elizabethton is looking bright. With Deb Gouge eager to jump in, and the incumbents committed to continuing their work, the community can expect some fresh perspectives alongside proven leadership. Let’s all look forward to their contributions in shaping Elizabethton’s future—together!
